Your Bio

Well, the short story is I was born and raised in San Pedro, California, otherwise unglamorously known as the Port of Los Angeles. I worked at the local Kaiser Hospital for 34 years, then retired in May 2013 at age 56 so I could travel around the US and Canada as a full-time RVer living in my 2011 Lance 1685 travel trailer. The adventure starts in late May 2013 and will consist of doing the things that are REALLY important to me --- backpacking, hiking, bird-watching, photography, and enjoying life in general. Thanks for taking a look at the world through my eyes, and stay tuned for Journeys With Discovery (yes, a riff on Lewis and Clark's Journey of Discovery).

Birds of Palos Verdes Peninsula/South Bay of Los Angeles, CA : The Palos Verdes Peninsula and South Bay of Los Angeles County are areas that can be rewarding to the birdwatcher, particularly when given patience, perseverance and a bit of luck. Native vegetation has been restored in parks and reserves, bringing birds back that haven't been seen for years. These photos were taken with the Canon 7D DSLR and either a Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5/5.6L IS USM or EF 500 f/4L lens. Birds With The Canon 500mm f4 L IS Lens : Purchased at Amazon.com in late March 2009, the "Big Boy" is rapidly becoming my favorite bird lens, which I use mounted on the BushHawk. Most of these shots are taken with the 1.4x TC, making an effective focal length of 700mm.

2007-2013 Bolsa Chica Birds : Taken at Huntington Beach, CA's Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (website: http://www.bolsachica.org ) using the (2007) Pentax K10D/Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm lens, (2008-2009) the Canon 40D/100-400 IS, and (2010) the Canon 7D with either the 100-400 IS or 500 f4, all mounted on a BushHawk shoulder mount.

Fall Colors in the Owens Valley and Eastern Sierra Nevada, October 6-13, 2012 : Autumn in the Owens Valley -- one of the deepest valleys in North America, hemmed-in by two giant mountain ranges, the Sierra Nevada and White Mountains -- can be spectacular, and in good years can rival the color spectacle of the Northeast. I'd always missed the peak color in the past, being either too early or too late, and was watching the reports carefully this year even though my vacation was aleady set for the week of October 7. So on the morning of Saturday, October 6, I packed up Discovery, my 2011 Lance 1685 travel trailer, hitched her to Tundra, my tow vehicle, ambled (I don't go over 55mph on the freeways) across the LA Basin, got gas at Mojave ($4.50 a gallon) then entered The Eastern Sierra Byway (as this section of Hwy 395 is called) and the Owens Valley at Little Lake. After passing through the "towns" of Olancha and Cartago -- we'll come back to those burgs at the end of the trip -- I reached Lone Pine, and it's here that the photos take over... All photos were taken using a Canon 40D DSLR and Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 lens.
