Steve Wolfe > The 3 RT nestlings had fledged about 2 weeks before (one crashed into a window and had to be rescued by the local wildlife rehab folks). Mom was still feeding them but laying out food at different locations so they could seek it out for themselves. On this day she had placed a freshly-killed pigeon on a rooftop. The youngest one (L'il Bro) got to it first, tussled with it then flew to the "Eating Tree" when Big Sister hurtled into him, causing the pigeon to fall on the grass. She then claimed it as her own and gave me a baleful look as I caught the action --
Steve Wolfe > Meanwhile, L'il Bro was just left with feathers stuck to him and wailing to Mom, who was watching on a nearby ledge --
Steve Wolfe > He finally got enough courage to sneak up to Sis, hoping she was too busy chowing down to notice him --
Steve Wolfe > Oops, got a little TOO close ---
Steve Wolfe > And so did I; I had pulled-in too close and was unprepared for her frenzied reaction --
Steve Wolfe > Meanwhile, the 3rd Hawklet had found a squirrel and was scampering along a ledge with it (the red band on her leg was put on for ID purposes as she was the one who went into "rehab" --
Steve Wolfe > The moment before --- well, YOU know...
Steve Wolfe > Kids being kids, as you can imagine they had created quite a mess, and as usual Mom was left to clean it up --
Steve Wolfe > Mom (I named her Mina after Wilhelmina/"Kaiser" Wilhelm of Germany, and her mate Willie) is looking a bit frayed after 2 months of raising her family, but she's still a beauty --
Meanwhile, L'il Bro was just left with feathers stuck to him and wailing to Mom, who was watching on a nearby ledge --
