Steve Wolfe  > The Red-Tail Hawks of Kaiser Hospital, Harbor City, California > May 22 (Waiting for the Parents)
This day was so interesting that I gave it it's own gallery. Nothing very noteworthy happened (unless you're like me and believe EVERY moment spent hawk-watching is noteworthy) and there wasn't a great deal of activity (until the end) --- it's just how the hawklets pass the time waiting for Mom and Dad. As you can see, they're not much different from human children...

Steve Wolfe > It's around 4:30pm and one of the hawklets is spreading its wings, showing the different types, shapes and colors of its feathers. Now THAT'S a pair of wings anyone would be proud to have...
Steve Wolfe > To pass the time, you can also ruffle your feathers...The hawklets are constantly cleaning themselves at this stage. One can only imagine the parasites in the nest after nearly a month and a half of occupancy --- and in-home eating...I'd taken home a branch from the nest that had fallen to the ground but threw it away after considering what microscopic critters might be on it.

Steve Wolfe > Continue trying out your wings --- after all, the Big Test is most likely only a few days away...
Steve Wolfe > It's 6:15pm and still no sign of Mom and Dad. You start taking an interest in things that would've bored you before such as a branch from the nest. First you grab it...
Steve Wolfe > ...examine it....
Steve Wolfe > ...then gnaw on it.
Steve Wolfe > You look at the evening flight traffic, in this case a passing seagull....
Steve Wolfe > ...then you notice objects in the nest. First you put your foot on it...
